Moody Charles (January 15, 1953 – June 28, 2009) was an Inupiaq Eskimo artist from Koyuk, a small village in Northwest Alaska. His Eskimo name was Dubeaahlook, which means ‘strong old house.’ Charles signed his carvings “Iglaak,” an Eskimo word that means visitor or stranger, because he believed “that everyone is just a visitor or stranger here.”
Charles carved on and off for 20 years. He was deeply devoted to mentoring others, and dedicated himself to nurturing Alaska Native values and knowledge. His lasting contributions to the mission of Cook Inlet Tribal Council through work in the Two Spirits Gallery, Ernie Turner Center and beyond will continue to impact the Alaska Native community for years to come. He will be deeply missed.
